The best coffee shops near MSMC

By Belle Frank

I am the self-appointed coffee connoisseur on campus. My addiction to a good caffeinated beverage has made me travel far and wide to find the best shops with the perfect balance of decent coffee and a studious atmosphere. Here are my favorites ranked:

5. Blacc Vanilla, Newburgh, NY

Located only a couple of blocks from campus, Blacc Vanilla has a swanky atmosphere accompanied with delicious lattes and beverages. They also have a savory menu for food that is to die for. The shop is complete with local art of popular musical performers. Enjoy your coffee with Chance the Rapper!

4. Bank Square, Beacon, NY

This coffee shop is the first building that greets you when you turn onto Main Street in Beacon. The owners opened the shop to create a relaxing atmosphere for locals and visitors alike. Bank Square has a variety of coffee drinks to order, mine being the Vietnamese iced coffee. It is made with dark roast drip coffee and sweetened condensed milk, giving it an intense flavor. The shop also has vegan and gluten free pastry options.

My New Favorite View in the Hudson Valley

Fall is a great time to go exploring outdoors, especially in the Hudson Valley region. I recently took a trip to the Constitution State Marsh in Garrison for a fall outing. The marsh is 270 acres with 80 acres of surrounding forest.  There is a slight hike to get to the boardwalk of the marsh, but it is not an intense hike at all. Even though you are walking through the woods, there is a clear path that you can follow. (If you’re still skeptical, I did this “hike” in boots that were a size too big and not at all made for hiking.)

Plan on visiting the Mount soon for an admissions event? Make a day or weekend of it in the beautiful Hudson Valley!

Newburgh Waterfront

Fantastic places to eat like Billy Joe’s Ribworks and Blu Pointe, a gorgeous walk along the water, and even the option for a cruise on the Hudson River, the Newburgh waterfront has it all.

Walkway Over the Hudson

The Walkway Over the Hudson is a former bridge turned walking pathway suspended above the glistening Hudson River in Poughkeepsie, NY, about a half hour from the Mount’s campus. The views alone are worth the trip, and the Walkway society will often hold events over the summer like Movies Under the Walkway, fireworks, and more. Continue Reading

Mount students enjoying Newburgh’s waterfront.

The Mount is blessed to be located in the historic and beautiful Hudson Valley with plenty to do and see. When they’re not busy studying or participating in on-campus events, our students can always find something to pique their interest in the local area. We asked some Mount students where their favorite places to go off-campus were, and here are their answers:

Binnacle Books – Derek O’Hanlon ’19
A quaint bookstore located in Beacon, NY featuring new and used books. Just 1.4 miles from campus!

Target
– Kaitlyn Barber ’21 and Carmel Lozada ’20
Who doesn’t enjoy a good Target run? Thankfully, there’s a Target (along with many other essental stores) located along Route 17-K in Newburgh 4 miles from campus). Plus, the MSMC Shuttle will take you there for free 3 days a week! Continue Reading
