Misconceptions High School Students Have About College

By Belle Frank

I sat down with sophomores Julia Loda and Julia Loprinzo to talk about the misconceptions they had about college.

Loda (left) is an IT major with a certification in Childhood Education, and Loprinzo (right) is a Social Science and History major with a certification in Childhood Education.

A common misconception about their major is that Childhood Education students just color and grade papers about the ABC’s, but that is not the case. Loda says, “Lesson planning takes hours. People don’t realize how much work their teachers put into all their daily lessons.”

The Mount Reflects: Living On Campus

Move-in day will be here before you know it! As you hurry around collecting dorm essentials, we thought we’d share with you some of the reasons Mount students love living on campus!

Danielle Petricca, Class of 2020 – “Being able to have fun with your friends whenever you want and being so close to school that you can wake up and be in class in 10 minutes. It’s a new experience to live away from home and it brings out independence that you might not even know you had. It creates a huge difference between high school and college.”

Christina Mistretta, Class of 2019 – “Getting to know people and making close relationships, and Late Knight events!”

Megan Torpey, Class of 2018 – “Being close to your friends 24/7!”

Nicole Laghezza, Class of 2019 – “Being so close to your classes. It’s only a 5 minute walk!”

Men’s Baseball Team – “Tons of campus activities, always around your friends, and accessibility to everything on campus (food, athletic buildings, study spaces).”

Ashley Lane, Class of 2018 – “The best part of living on campus is definitely always having friends around. Living with your friends provides constant entertainment and they are also a great support system. Another great aspect of living on campus is that it makes getting involved and going to events so much more enjoyable, since they’re within walking distance from your bedroom.”

Amanda Greenwood, Class of 2019 – “Living on campus is great because your friends are never too far away when you need them!”

Alex Perlak, Class of 2020 – “Everything is right here. Everything is in walking distance and you don’t have to drive looking for food or something to do because there is always something happening at the Mount. I also loved living on campus because I got to have a roommate and experience one of the greatest parts of being a college student, autonomy.”

So there you have it – 8+ reasons why living at the Mount is great! As you start to pack, make sure you check out our handy “What to Bring to Campus” list for more information. We’ll see you in a month, Class of 2021!

The Mount Reflects: Orientation

Who’s pumped for Orientation? As you pack up and prepare to head out this week or next for Orientation, you might be a little nervous – but don’t worry! You’re going to have a great time getting to know the campus and meeting your new friends and classmates!

Orientation holds a special place in the hearts of current Mount students as marking the beginning of some of the best years of their lives. We asked some of our students what their favorite parts of Orientation were, and here’s what they said:

Megan Torpey, Senior – “The scavenger hunt!!”

Nicole Laghezza, Junior – “Although some may disagree, I enjoyed the icebreaker games; it forces you to step out of your comfort zone and meet new people.”

Alex Perlak, Sophomore – “It definitely had to be the relationships I made with my peers and Orientation Leader. At Orientation, I opened up and had a great time. Orientation is only one night, so make the most out of it.”

Amanda Greenwood, Junior – “The Orientation Leaders! And the DJ party is honestly just so much fun.”

Danielle Petricca, Sophomore – “Having everyone together in the gym to play games, and just meeting new people in general.”

Ashley Lane, Senior – “The best part of summer Orientation is getting the feel for the campus and meeting your classmates. Building relationships there helps for sure when there are some friendly faces in August!”

Christina Mistretta, Junior – “Dance party/BBQ on the Sod Field!”

Members of the Men’s Baseball Team – “Scavenger Hunt, winning prizes, Kahoot, learning the college experience, and MAKING NEW FRIENDS!”

You’ve got so much to look forward to at Orientation, Class of 2022! Make sure you visit www.msmc.edu/orientation for a schedule, packing list, and bios of the Orientation Leaders. We’ll see you soon!

My First Year: A Freshman’s Reflection on His First Spirit Week

Alexander Perlak and class members get ready to compete in their first Mount Olympics

Editor’s note: Each year at the Mount, we celebrate Spirit Week. The college community comes together and participates in a variety of events. It’s one of the most highly anticipated events of the year. Knight Life caught up with Freshmen Class President Alexander Perlak to hear about his experiences!

If you asked me as a senior in high school who would be the freshmen class president at Mount Saint Mary College this year, I probably wouldn’t have said myself. But here I am, president of the Class of 2020, and I’m loving this position more and more each day. Continue Reading
