Developing My Passion in English


At the Mount, we encourage our students to find their passion in the classroom.

Today on the blog, Sierra Caban, a sophomore English major pursuing certification in Childhood and Special Education, talks about being passionate about your studies, and why she’s found her passion in the Division of Arts and Letters at the Mount.

“Growing up, I always loved to read and write. Throughout high school, I lost touch with that part of my childhood and focused on just reading for school or doing other extracurricular activities. When I began to look into colleges, I was looking to be a Criminology major, but wasn’t 100% set on that. In my junior year of high school, I had an amazing English teacher that helped me realize that English was my passion. When I first came to the Mount, the English table at the Admissions event drew me in because of all of the classes offered and just how friendly the people were. I remember talking to Professor Phillips and Dr. Shea for a while at Accepted Students Day because they were telling me all about what the Mount offered in terms of classes and what I could get involved in.  Continue Reading

Echoes of a Philosophy Minor


Maria Greco ’13 did something very few Mount students take on – she graduated with a Philosophy minor during her time at the Mount, something that she’s still grateful for today.

Back in 2013 during her senior year, we highlighted Maria in the MSMC Magazine, and she touched on how her Philosophy minor made her think about her other course subjects and her faith in a deeper way.

Classes with instructor Justin Chiarot helped her “push boundaries and ask questions about my faith,” she noted in 2013. “It intrigued me and made me want to learn more.”

Now a nurse, Maria still sees the echoes of her Philosophy training in her work and faith. Continue Reading

Catrina Colombo – sophomore Undeclared major:“Taking a little bit, day-by-day, so cramming isn’t an option. It’s less stressful and more efficient!”

Brianna De Lizzio – sophomore Nursing major: “Start early, way before you think you need to. Even if your friends aren’t studying yet, it is okay. You will be more prepared. If you make a study guide for each exam as the semester is going on, you can compile all of your study guides at the end to study for your final, and you don’t need to spend time making one. Plus, if you keep up with your work and do well all year, you won’t have as much pressure on yourself to do well on the final.” Continue Reading

Undeclared: Finding a major at the Mount


It’s the age-old question – “What do you want to be when you grow up?”

The reality is that many high school seniors don’t know what they want to major in – and that’s okay. That’s why, here at the Mount, we have a specially-designed program that doesn’t force students to find a major on their own, but rather provides the professional staff and college-wide support needed to help make that decision.

We wanted to know how undeclared students at the Mount ended up deciding on a major, so we asked a few current students and alumni to tell us about their undeclared journey.

Victoria Laiso ’19, Human Services major with a minor in Criminology– “I came into the Mount undeclared and my academic coach, Megan Morrissey, and a few other academic advisors helped me find my place here at Mount and the career I want to pursue once graduating with my degree. Meg helped me schedule classes that she thought fit best for me and listened to my interests so she could guide me in the best direction possible. We are also very close and she knows me well enough to understand what I am intrigued by and gave me different classes to understand what field of work would work best for me to better my future.  Continue Reading

My First Year: Becoming Independent and Social


My name is Megan Lee, and I am a freshman here at the Mount. Before coming to the Mount, I was just your average high school student. In all honesty, I did not have many friends in high school. I would spend my high school days in constant routine: waking up, going to school, going home, doing homework, then just going to bed. Unfortunately, I did not have that perfect high school experience that most teens go through, but I did that to myself. I was not very open or social with the few friends I had, or even with my family.

When I was applying for and visiting different colleges and universities, I was scared, just as everyone was at the time. I had never been on my own before and I constantly relied on my parents for practically everything. I had never been in an environment that is as social as college. I thought, “No one is going to like me” and “College isn’t for me.” To put it simply, college just seemed too much for me at the time.

Eventually, on my search for my new home for the next four years, I came across Mount Saint Mary College. One of my family members had gone here, and she told me all the great things about the college, so I decided to visit it. Once I stepped onto the campus and talked with a few staff members and current students at the time, I just knew it was right for me. The college had the major that I wanted, and it automatically felt like home to me – and you just cannot beat that view of the mountains and the Hudson River.

The second time I visited the Mount, I finally decided it was time to commit. It was a scary, but exciting moment in my life. I was finally going to go to college, I believed that I made the right decision with my choice…and I was right. In just a few weeks, the Mount became my new home. From the classes I am taking, to my current professors, to the people I have met on campus, I have never felt so accepted for who I am before. The Mount has helped me open a whole new side to myself that not even I knew about. I have seen myself changing and growing in these last few months, which makes me extremely ecstatic for my future. I am learning something new about myself every day, which makes me wonder – what am I going to be like in the next year? The next four years? I think about these questions every day, and I am determined to find out.

Not only has the Mount helped me to grow as a person, but it has also helped me to become much more independent. When I was a senior in high school, I could not wait to move into a dorm room and live in a place where I was completely independent. However, I did not realize how much responsibility comes with independence. There are so many little details when it comes to being independent, especially when it comes to managing your time. You have to learn how to balance school work, grades, staying healthy, exercising enough, making sure your dorm room is clean, being social, and much more. It was overwhelming and hard to adjust to at first, but as the weeks went on, I learned so much about being independent and how to balance it all out.

My biggest piece of advice for all first-year students is that it is easier to adjust to a brand-new environment when it automatically feels like home to you. Being in a place where you feel at home and safe will help you to grow as a person. It gives you the confidence you need to be yourself. Don’t be scared to try new things and open up to others. Everyone at college, no matter where you go, is there to help you. Sometimes the scariest things can end up being the most enjoyable, memorable experiences.
