My Experience as an Orientation Leader!

by · May 31, 2017

So you’ve sent in your deposit, and you are committed to Mount Saint Mary College. Congratulations, and welcome to the Mount family!

After spending more than a year preparing for this moment, now that it’s here, you are probably left thinking “now what?” Now, you register for Orientation and get ready for the best four years of your life! Read on to hear from one of our Orientation Leaders about what to expect from your two-day excursion here.

Hi! My name is Kayla (bottom row, second from right), and I am an Orientation Leader (OL). I became an OL because I wanted to be more involved in the Mount Saint Mary College community, and staff members encouraged me to apply.

During orientation, students are assigned a group, which includes an OL and a group of fellow incoming freshmen. Students stay with this group for the whole weekend. An orientation leader does exactly what you think we would do: we lead a group of incoming freshmen through the activities we have planned for orientation weekend.

As OL’s, we help the incoming freshmen make the transition from high school to college. During your first year here, you will be invited by your OL to meet up once a week, just to touch base and see how you are adjusting to college. This is a great way to meet other students and to get advice from upperclassmen.

Incoming freshmen attending Orientation should expect two days jam-packed with stuff to do. Students receive a lot of information all at once, including where things are located on campus, and many of the rules and expectations the faculty and staff will have for you once you are here. But, there will also be tons of fun activities planned to help you get acquainted with college life. In past years, we have had dance parties, inflatables, and giveaways!

When you are packing for Orientation, remember that you will be here over night. Remember to bring sheets and blankets for the bed, bathroom toiletries (including hand soap), and clothes that you will be comfortable in. Everything else, including food, is provided.

Orientation is an amazing experience and I can’t wait to see you there!

Kayla O’Connor, Class of 2019, is a public relations major from Kearny, NJ.
