IT Majors Explore World Outside of Classroom

by · March 7, 2017

Hi, I’m Sean Jennings, president of Byte Knights on campus. The IT program used to be one of the only majors without the associated club. We were able to change that when we formed the Byte Knights IT Club in the fall of 2015. Since becoming a recognized club, we’ve been able to utilize our new resources to expand on the theory we learn in the classroom and see the IT world in a different perspective through trips, tours, guest speakers, and volunteer efforts.

Being a part of the Byte Knights Club has allowed me to explore the different components of IT through the guest speakers we’ve had and the tours we’ve done with IBM in Poughkeepsie and WNYC. We have also gained experience volunteering at the Newburgh Armory’s Internet Programming and 2D Design classes. Taking part in each of these opportunities has allowed me to assess my career path and fine-tune it toward what I could picture myself doing in the long term. Our club continues to grow as its members explore different career paths and develop as professionals.

This fall, we decided to focus on a trip to New York Public Radio in New York City, where we were given a tour of the IT infrastructure and the broadcast environment within their building. WNYC broadcasts to millions of people worldwide, and we had the opportunity to get a behind the scenes look at this process. Mr. Shultis, the Chief Technology Officer, guided us on a tour through just about everything we could’ve asked and more. He brought us to places such as broadcast booths, rooms housing their IT infrastructure, and even outside a live broadcast of “The Brian Lehrer Show.” Being able to see all the different parts of their operation in person was an appreciable experience that couldn’t have happened within the bounds of a classroom.

If you’re looking to get out of the classroom and see the wide-ranging and expanding information technology field in person, joining the Byte Knights IT Club is your best choice. We are very open to suggestions, and are always working with the faculty to create opportunities for everybody. For any information about the Byte Knights IT Club, please feel free to reach out to us!
