We recently reached out to the president of the Delta Leadership Society here on campus, Elisa DiGiacopo, to learn more about what they do as an organization.
Knight Life: Can you give us a brief overview of your club?
Elisa: Delta Leadership Society is a philanthropy club that focuses on doing charity work both on campus and in the Hudson Valley community. As a club, we brainstorm different charities that we would like to assist and then create events that either fundraise for or raise awareness about the particular charity or issue that we have chosen.
Some of the events that we do every year include the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Light the Night Walk, Letters to the Troops, and Relay for Life. The club has also co-sponsored events with Aging United at Johnes Home, a senior citizen center in Newburgh, where we have run some crafting activities. We also hold tie-dye events, chocolate-covered pretzel and strawberry sales, bead bracelet making, bingo, and more. Our events either raise money or awareness for the charity of our choice.
We don’t only focus on charity work, however; we also like to have some fun! We have an annual movie night at the end of the semester and also did a trick-or-treating event last semester. We’re always planning different and fun activities throughout the year.
Knight Life: What is your favorite activity that you’ve done as a club?
Elisa: My favorite activity was our chocolate-covered strawberry sale last spring, where we were raising money for Joy Jars. Joy Jars is an organization that creates little goodie bags for kids in local hospitals and their families. Instead of doing a traditional bake sale, we decided to instead change it up by organizing the chocolate-covered strawberry sale, which ended up being a big success. And the kids loved their Joy Jars!
Knight Life: Why should people join your club?
Elisa: People should join the Delta Leadership Society because not only do we raise money and awareness for charities, but we also have fun doing it. There’s never a dull moment. We want to make a difference in the community.
Knight Life: How can someone contact you for more information?
Elisa: If you’re interested in joining Delta Leadership, email me (Elisa) at email@example.com or find us on Facebook under MSMC Delta Leadership Society (MSMC Delta Leadership Society). We hold meetings every other Monday at 7:30 p.m. in Hudson 101. Hope to see you there!
