The 2014-2015 MSMC Dance Team at Bonfire 2014. Briana Croce (kneeling, center) is the president of the team.
Hello! My name is Brianna Croce, and I am from Staten Island, NY. I am a senior Information Technology student seeking certification in Elementary and Special Education, and am also the president of the MSMC Dance Team.
The Mount Saint Mary College Dance Team is a club on campus through the Student Government Association. The Dance Team performs at many events on campus such as basketball games, Alumni and Family Weekend, Bonfire, Spring Weekend, and Relay for Life. We have also performed in the community at local walks and events taking place in the Hudson Valley.
As a team, we practice three times a week in the Kaplan dance room. There, we teach members how to stretch properly, and we work on dance technique. By doing this, we build strength in our muscles which helps prepare us for the different moves we do in our dances. We then work on each dancer’s ability on an individual level, providing feedback for each dancer to work on. After we stretch and practice our technique, we either learn a new dance or review a dance for an upcoming performance. We perform a variety of dance genres including jazz, kick-line, hip-hop, and contemporary.
The dance team is not just about dance, however. On the team, we develop friendships and bond together as a family. For example, each month, the team gets together for “team bonding days,” which this year included a dance movie night, Zumba, and “Dancegiving” dinner. The members really enjoyed “Dancegiving” because the members got to know each other even more over a good meal.
The team also bonds during fundraising events, which help us in raising money for merchandise such as t-shirts and sweatpants; this year we were even able to get team jackets and dance bags. Our most popular fundraising events include car washes and bake sales. In fact, my favorite activity that we’ve done as a club is our annual car wash fundraiser at McDonalds. I feel that I really get to socialize and learn more about my members at this event. The car wash is also fun when we see how many dirty cars we have to clean off!
This year we have created a Facebook page where people can view videos and pictures of our performances. The page also keeps the audience up-to-date on our upcoming performances and events. You can like the dance team at www.facebook.com/KnightsDanceTeamMSMC!
The Dance Team welcomes any new members, whether they have prior dance experience or not. The team is a walk-on team, which means anyone can join, and no auditions are required. Members can also join at any point in the season. Joining dance is a great way to stay healthy and get daily exercise, and finally, being on the team is a great way to meet new people and develop friendships that will last a lifetime. Dance is a place where members can leave behind daily stress and have fun!
